A word of welcome from the Pastor

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the pages of the St. Barbara Parish web site. On behalf of the entire faith community at the Mission I am delighted to greet you with the traditional “The Lord give you peace,” which was St. Francis’ way of beginning a conversation with everyone he met.

Our parish is a ministry of the Franciscan Friars of the Province of St. Barbara and we have been serving people in this beautiful place since 1786. The Spanish Friars came here first via Mexico, inspired by their leader Saint Junipero Serra, to minister to Native American peoples and to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. This mission of bringing the Gospel continues today as we welcome people from all walks of life to our community and invite them to pray and minister alongside us in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. The Franciscan spirit is marked by joy, gratitude and humility, with a deep reverence for Creation and a concern for all people whom St. Francis called brothers and sisters. The Franciscan heart is drawn especially to those brothers and sisters who are poorest or who live on the peripheries.

I hope that you enjoy browsing through these pages. You may pick up the distinct ‘Franciscan flavor’ in the beautiful environment of the Old Mission and through the various ways in which we endeavor to serve both our parish community and all who come to this sacred place. We pray that you find peace at this shrine but above all, that you come to know the boundless love God has for you in Jesus Christ, our Lord.

The Franciscan Friars at Santa Barbara Mission will keep you and your loved ones in our daily prayers.

With brotherly affection,
Fr. Adrian, ofm
